Recycling urban waste in urban agriculture in Bamako and Ougadougou
Objectives
This applied research project examines the technical and operational potential for improving the use of urban organic waste in urban and peri-urban agriculture in Bamako, Mali and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The project's timeframe is March 1999 to May 2002.
Specific objectives
Strengthening the development of a sustainable (peri)-urban agricultural sector in Bamako and Ouagadougou.
Strengthening the development of a viable system of processing, distribution and marketing of organic waste material for application in (peri)-urban agriculture.
Development of effective linkages between the (peri)-urban agricultural and urban waste management sectors.
Formulation of development scenarios and policy recommendations and dissemination of results.

Methodology
The general approach of this research proposal focuses on exploring effective and operational linkages between the (peri)-urban agricultural and urban waste management sectors in Bamako and Ouagadougou, through application of urban organic waste products in agricultural production. After identification of the general developments and studying some specific issues in these two sectors, the constraints and potentials for linking of technical, organisational and institutional aspects are addressed. In addition necessary policies to facilitate effective linkages are identified and a number of development scenarios formulated.
